This year we are piloting a new format for the annual New Investigator and Postdoctoral Competitions. As detailed below, to enter these competitions you must email your paper to by March 15th, 2008. Papers submitted by this deadline that conform to the specifications described below will be sent to the respective Competition Committee. Each Committee will select the top 3 papers for their competition and will notify the finalists of their decision by April 7th, 2008. The 3 finalists for each competition will present their talks to the Society during two special sessions Saturday afternoon. The winner of the competitions will be announced at the Banquet Saturday evening. Poster Competition

All poster presentations are automatically entered into a competition for a $500 award for the best poster.

New Investigator Competition

Description: The New Investigator Competition is an award for the best paper by a graduate student, carrying with it a cash prize of $500. We have changed the procedure for this competition. Please see Paper Specifications below.

Eligibility: 1) You must not yet have your Ph.D. People receiving their Ph.D. in 2008, however, are eligible. 2) Previous winners of the New Investigator competition are NOT eligible. 3) The paper submitted may be coauthored. However, to be eligible, the paper must be the result of a project on which the graduate student made the primary contribution. This includes the intellectual contribution, execution, and writing of the submitted document; accordingly, the graduate student is expected to be listed a first author should a version of the paper eventually be published in a professional journal.

Postdoctoral Competition

Description: The Postdoctoral Competition is an award for the best paper by a recent Ph.D., carrying with it a cash prize of $500. We have changed the procedure for this competition. Please see Paper Specifications below.

Eligibility: 1) You must have completed your Ph.D. or other postgraduate degree within the past five years (i.e. 2003-2007). 2) Previous winners of the Postdoctoral Competition are NOT eligible. 3) The paper submitted may be coauthored. However, to be eligible, the paper must be the result of a project on which the submitting individual made the primary contribution. This includes the intellectual contribution, execution, and writing of the submitted document.

Paper Specifications for the New Investigator and Postdoctoral Competitions

Paper Specifications: All papers submitted for these competitions must conform to APA guidelines or similar formatting standards in a flagship disciplinary journal. Manuscripts must be double-spaced. Finally, manuscripts must be no longer than 5,000 words in length (excluding references). Manuscripts longer than this limit will not be considered. The use of Times New Roman 12-point font is strongly encouraged to insure uniformity of appearance across submissions. Please indicate the word length on the title page of the manuscript. Papers reporting research involving human or non-human animal subjects must include a statement to the effect that the research was conducted in accord with the ethical guidelines of the governing body or association of the applicant’s discipline.

You can apply for the competitions whether the paper has been published or not. So long as the paper is the result of a project on which the submitting individual made the primary contribution -- first author billing.

All manuscripts shall be submitted electronically and the size of the main electronic file shall not exceed 10MB in size. In cases where graphics, figures, or other supplementary materials necessitate a submission that exceeds 10MB, the submission shall be divided into several files, where no single file exceeds 10MB in size. These size limitations will be enforced to insure the timely electronic transfer of files between judges.

Deadline: The deadline for submitting written papers for either competition is March 15th, 2008. You are supposed to submit your paper by emailing a .doc or a .pdf file to. Please type NEW INVESTIGATOR AWARD or POSTDOCTORAL AWARD, as appropriate, in the subject line of your email.
